The 45-year-old Croatian star Klashnic won a double championship in Werder Bremen. He was called the "Kidney Warrior" by fans because he underwent kidney transplants three times. In 2020, Klashnic received £4 million in compensation from his old club Werder Bremen because the painkillers provided by the club worsened his kidney disease.
In an interview with German TV, Krashnich said: "Who knows how long I can live. Although I am sick and need to take medicine, I still want to be grateful that I am still alive. Of course, I am very angry. I don't want anyone to go through what I went through, and no amount of compensation can restore my health."
"I don't think you can play any professional sport without painkillers, but if I had known I had kidney problems, I wouldn't have taken those drugs."
