According to The Athletic, EFL is considering upgrading the English Championship play-offs to add another round, and the participating teams will be expanded to 6 teams.

The proposal has received extensive initial support from the Championship club, and plans to adopt a similar competition system to the National League: fifth place vs. eighth place, sixth place vs. seventh place, and the game is a single-game winning streak at home of the higher-ranked teams.

However, unlike all playoffs in the National League that are single-game, the winner of the knockout round will continue to compete with the third and fourth teams for two rounds, and the final winner will decide the Premier League promotion quota at Wembley Stadium.

If EFL can convince the Premier League to give up its opposition, the new competition system is expected to be implemented next season, injecting more passion into the final stage of the Championship season. The EFL, the FA and the Premier League have not commented on this at present.
